The a im of this study was to investigate the umbilical cord in different phases of intrauterin life, in order to find any other remnants than allantoic duct and vitellin duct. For this purpose, 40 umbilical cords were used from the beginning of the 11th week of gestation to term (40 weeks). Sections were made from the fetal and placental regions of the umbilical cords. These sections were studied under Hght microscopy. Different remnants were encountered in these materials. Some of the remnants were ball shaped and some were surrounded by celi membrane and filled by cells. We conduded that these remnants originated from embryonic vessels, yolk sac (omphalomesenteric duct) and allantoic duct. According to these findings, we suggest that the remnants found in umbilical cord d id not belong to only allantoic duct and vitellin duct.
