Psychiatric diagnosis in respect to the nature of the medical illness in the psychiatric consultation patients in a university hospital

Abstract


 

It was investigated 57 in-patients who have been referred to psychiatric consultation in respect to sociodemographic properties, the nature of medical illness, psychiatric diagnosis, the history of psychiatric disorder, and the compliance of psychiatric therapy. 31.5% of the patients had an acute medical illness, 24.5% had a cronical medical illness, and 21.0% had a tumor. 87.7% of the patients had not been taken psychiatric treatment and the history of psychiatric illness was not established in 91.2% of their families. Depressive disorder in 40.3%, somatoform disorder in 17.5%, adjustment disorder in 12.2%, delirium in 12.2%, and anxiety disorder in 8.7% of the patients were diagnosed. The rate of the patients who discontinued the therapy after the discharge was 87.7%. It was found that the rate of depression is increasing while medical illness ’ progression and severity increase.
