Aim;According to the literature, HIV/AIDS cases are decreased in developed countries. However, it is seen that cases are increasing in our country like in the other developing countries. According to 1998 data, the number HIV/AIDS cases in Turkey is 864. The most effective method in controlling the infection is education. The duty of the press in informing people should not be denied. However, this duty is priority of the general practitioners working in primary health care. This study is done for determining the knowledge of the intern doctors about the methods of controlling HIV/AIDS and the point of view about written and spoken press.
Method: This study was done between 1 November 1998 - 10 May 1999. A questionnaire about this subject was applied to 196 intern doctors.
Findings;Intern doctors knew HIV/AIDS and 99.5 % knew that it was transmitted by sexual relationship, 92.3 % by blood, 58.7 % by pregnancy and birth. 94.9 % of them knew it could be avoided by safe sex, 63.8 % by applying HIV test to the blood which is going to be used in transfusion, 53.6 % by precautions like using glove, well sterilizing of the injections, or disposable injections, etc., 9.2 % by education. 82.6 % believed that written and spoken press was supposed to inform the people correctly, 14.8 % believed avoiding the visual displaying of the patients by obeying the secrecy principle in HIV/AIDS. 7.1 % believed the necessity of teaching to live with them.
Resuit;Intern doctors will have the necessary information and sensibility on HIV/AIDS when they will work in primary health care units.
