Prevalence of Prostatism Symptoms at Aged 35-85 Males in Yesilyurt Town, Malatya

Abstract


 

An epidemiological study was carried out to determine the prevalence of prostatism symptoms in males between

35-85 years of age in Yesilyurt town, Malatya. Five hundred and seven males with a mean age of 55, chosen by

50 % systematic sampling, were enrolled in this study.

Prevalence of prostatism was determined as 17.8 % according to Modified Boyarski Symptom Score. Nocturia

49.5 %, intermittency. Among these patients 49.5 % had symptoms of nocturia, 28.2% had intermittency, 24.1%

had dysuria, 23.1% had weak urinary outflow, 21.9 had frequency, 19.3% had urgency, 18.9% had postvoid

dribbling, 10.5% had hesitancy and 7.1 had postvoiding residual urine feeling. No statistical significance was

determined between age groups concerning dysuria and frequency ( p>0.05). Other symptoms and total

symptom score were increased in patients aged 55 years or older ( p>0.05).

As a result, prostatism symptoms were identified as important health problems because of their effects on the

quality of life. Physicians working at primary health centers and urology specialists must work in cooperation in

order to reduce the morbidity and complications of BPH.
