Abstract

Background: Warts are common benign ephithelial proliferations caused by human papillomavirus. Cryotherapy has been used generally in the treatment of warts. Therefore, we decided to determine the factors affecting the cryotherapy on warts.

Design: Cryotherapy was performed at 3-week intervals, two freeze-thaw cycles and three times. The results were evaluated according to type, number and duration of wart, age and sex.

Results: Ninety six patients were treated with cryosurgery. Seventyfive (78.1%) were healed and 21 (21.9%) were not cured. The evaluation of warts according to types showed that the plantar warts had less response rate compared to other types of warts (p=0.0008). It was observed that the older the patient, the lesser the succes rate of the treatment (r=-0.0761, p=0.008).

Conclusion: It was noted that the type and age were important, on the other hand the number, duration of wart and the sex of the patients were not influential in cryotherapy response.

Key Words: Cryotherapy, Warts, Age, Sex
