The Relationship between Post-Voiding Residual Urine Existance and Urinary Tract Infections

Abstract


 

Objectives: The relationship between post-voiding residual urine volume (PVR) and urinary tract (UTI) infection is unclear. We researched PVR as a risk factor for UTI and we also investigated effects of obstructive urine flow rate, pyuria and cystitis like symptoms on urinary culture (UC) results.

Material Methods: The study included 139 patients, mean age being 55.4 (range 25-78) years, without neurological anomalies, history of indwelling catheterization, endourologic intervention and clean intermittant catheterization. Fourteen patients were diabetic. Patients were asked for cystitis like symptoms; including disuria, suprapubic pain, pollakuria, urgency. Uroflowmetry was perfomed to all patients. The amount of PVR was measured with bladder scan immediate after voiding. Urine analysis and UC were made for all patients. The limit values of residual volume were considered as 50 ml (Group 1) and 100 ml (Group 2) and relation with positive UC, pyuria and cystitis like symptoms were researched in both groups.

Results: There were no statistical differences between PVR, positive UC, obstructive flow rate, cystitis like symptoms and pyuria (p>0.05) in both groups. UC was positive in 22.2% and 3.6% in patients with and without piyuria, respectively (p=0.004). In diabetic group there was no relation between these parameters and UC.

Conclusions: Although we used different residual urine value limit in our study, there was no relation between PVR and positive UC, on the other hand we determined relationship between pyuria and positive UC.
