Relationship Between Smoking Status and Anger the University of Students

Abstract


Aim: It is a descriptive, cross-sectional research carried out in order to examine the relationship between and smoking status and anger of the students in Firat University, in the college of Health Services.

Material and Methods: This study was carried out at the programs of medical documentation and secretary, medical laboratory, anesthesia, radiology, in the college of Health Services. In May 2001-2002, there were 166 students in the college and 162 of them were reached. In the questionarie form, in addition to the variables related to demographic features and smoking status and Trait Anger and Anger Expression Scales were ıncluded.

Results: It was found that 44.4% students of all respondents were current smokers. Cigarette smoking average age 15.55±3.03. The students’ trait anger scores 21.44±4.46 (min:11, max:33), anger/ out scores 16.12±3.55 (min:8, max:26),anger /in scores 16.43±3.55 (min:8, max:25), anger /control scores 22.34±4.30 (min:11, max:32) were found. Smoking prevalence among students is high. A significant correlation was not found among cigarette smoking status with trait anger and anger expression scores (p>0.05).

Conclusion: Thus, we have agreed that from the first year studies which prevent the young at university from starting to smoke or make it easier to stop smoking are essential and suitable to be carried out.
