Abstract

Abstract : Maharishi Amrit Kalash ( MAK ), an ayurvedic food supplement, was tested for its effects on opioid receptors in the brain, nauropeptides and psycho1ogical effects in human volunteers. No changes were seen in the biochemical and hematological parameters or liver enzqmes in volunteers. MAK showed generalized inhibition of opioid receptor activity; however, the extent of inhibition differed depending upon the sub-type of receptor. Plasma levels of substance P showed significant decrease in the volunteers. Normal subjects' self-report on MAK suggested reduction in depression and psychiatric distress in general.
