Characteristics of herbal medicine users among internal medicine patients: a cross-sectional survey

Abstract

Background: Herbal medicine is one of the oldest treatment of many healthcare conditions known to man. Herbal medicine has long been used for a wide range of medical conditions, as well as for general health enhancement. This study was performed to assess the characteristics of herbal medicine users among internal medicine patients in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was performed using an online self-administered questionnaire on a sample of 600 random participants of Saudi Arabia. Descriptive and odds ratio were used in data analysis.
Results: The study included 600 participants, 409 (68.2%) of them were users of herbal medicines. Herbal medicine use was positively associated in univariate analysis with age, gender, main diagnosis and fast food consumption (p
