Modern understanding of cardiovascular prevention: Ayurvedic root with a modern shoot.

Abstract

Modern medicine is beginning to realise that prevention is key to human health, a concept that is the basis of Ayurveda. Ahara (diet), aushadhi (drugs), and vihara (lifestyle) are the three important pillars in Ayurveda. Prevention in modern medicine has a broad remit; encompassing clean healthy environment, personal hygiene, immunisation, lifestyle changes, to even drugs. This article aims to summarise the current understanding
and practice of prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in modern medicine. However, the concepts of CVD in Ayurveda may differ,3 and the reader is advised to take such differences into consideration.
