Yüksel Altuntaş, Feyza Yener Öztürk.

Abstract

Prediabetes is the intermediate period between normoglycemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Fasting plasma glucose concentration between 100 and 125 mg/dl (Impaired fasting glucose) or second hour plasma glucose concentration of oral glucose tolerance test between 140-199 mg/dl (Impaired glucose tolerance) is termed as prediabetes. Also, HbA1c level between 5.7-6.4% has been accepted as prediabetes according to the recommendations of ADA in 2010. Every year 5 to 10% of prediabetic patients progress into type 2 diabetes mellitus. As associated with dislipidemia, hypertension and obesity, prediabetes is an important risk factor for developing cardiovascular diseases. So, early diagnosis and treatment for prediabetes may interfere in preventing type 2 diabetes development.

Key words: Prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, impaired fasting glucose
