‘Shikara’: A Kafkaesque Study of the Encounter with Law

MANORANJAN RATH, DR. PRAMOD KUMAR DAS.

Abstract
With the emergence of a middle class in Odisha during the late nineteenth century Odia literature saw
some unprecedented developments in different genres. The new class for the first time wrote about the tribal life
with all its colours. The much anthologized short story ‘Shikara’ is one such creation that portrays an innocent
tribal’s life and his tryst with the law of the land which is beyond his understanding. We come across such
encounters of the common man with the Law in Kafka’s writings. Kafka’s characters in their futile effort of
fighting against the unknown Law show the lacunae in the system. Shikara depicts this fight though
unknowingly through its central character. The paper aspires to use Kafka’s notions of law in human life as the
way to analyse the mental state of the protagonist in Shikara.

Key words: Shikara, Kafka, tribal life, Bhagabati Charan Panigrahi
