Objective: To determine the characteristics of culprit arteries in patients undergoing primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) at Lady Reading Hospital.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Cardiology, Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar from 1/1/2023 to 30/6/2023. All patients aged above 18 years presented with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and going for coronary angiography were included in the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS Version 23.
Results: Out of total 151 patients, 59 (39.1%) were diabetic, 95 (62.9%) were hypertensive, 35 (23.2%) were smokers, and 15 (9.9%) had family history of coronary artery disease (CAD). We found that 57 % experienced Anterior Wall MI (AWMI), 40% had Inferior Wall MI (IWMI), 0.7% high lateral MI, 0.5% posterior MI and 1.8% had lateral MI. The distribution of culprit arteries revealed that the left anterior descending artery (LAD) was the most affected, followed by the right coronary artery (RCA). It was found that many lesions were proximal compared to mid and distal. Moreover, most lesions were totally obstructed.
Conclusion: Patients with STEMI are usually have total occlusion of culprit artery and LAD is the most involved artery in STEMI.
