ELEMENTS OF YOGA IN AYURVEDA

Abstract

Yoga and Ayurveda are allied disciplines. The critical study of the Ayurvedic classics indicates that most of the basic concepts of Yoga are already described in Ayurvedic texts. The descriptions of ethical principles like Maitri. Karuna. Mudita, Upeksha, the Yamas and Niyamas, Asana. Pranayama, Pratyahara and advanced ment.al processes arc found both in Yoga and Ayurveda with similar emphasis. The Siddhis attainable thi"ough Yoga are also described by Charaka in full details. 'Ihe significant description of three Upastambhas viz Ahara, Nidra and Brahmacharya and the emphasis on purificatory procedures in the two systems arc also equally empbasised
