Abstract

On 25 November, 2023 a day long conference was held at BDS conference hall and jointly organized by the Coastal Vet Society (CVS-BD) and Grameen Jano Unnayan Sangstha (GJUS). The workshop was inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr. Akond Md. Rafiqul Islam, Senior General Manager, Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF). In the occasion, Professor Mohammad Ali, Treasurer, Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) and Zakir Hossain Mohin, Executive Director, GJUS were present as special guest. The program was presided over by Dr. Md. Nurul Alam, Director (In charge), Barshal and moderated by Professor Dr. Ashit Kumar Paul, Department of Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics, PSTU. A workshop was held also on “Present scenario of buffalo, goat and sheep artificial insemination: perspective Bangladesh”. Total 100 participants from different organization were joined in this workshop. The main objectives of this workshop were to know about the present scenario of artificial insemination (AI) of buffalo and also to know how the challenges will be overcome by using the existing facilities. The workshop keynote presentation was delivered by Professor Dr. Dibyendu Biswas, Department of Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics, PSTU. Total workshop was anchoring by Professor Dr. Ashit Kumar Paul, Department of Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics, PSTU. Dr Biswas found that several types of buffalo breed available in Bangladesh like Murrah, Nili Ravi, Nagpuri and Surti. However, the AI is very challenges in buffalo due to several regions and about only 3.7% AI coverage was done at this moment but it was very low from the India. In Bangladesh, the service per conception in buffalo was 1.38-1.88, that was much higher from the neighboring country India. Therefore, most of the buffaloes were showing heat at early and late night. Dr. Biswas also found that highest conception rate was found when the AI was done between 19-24 h after showing heat. The survival rate was higher in case of AI-calf. The conception rate was lower in artificial insemination process but this rate will be increased up to 66.6% if the buffaloes was subjected to synchronization protocol.
Based on the workshop the main constraints and recommendation of buffalo rearing is given bellow:
Constraints:
• Lack of buffalo breeding policy
• Lack of recording systems
• Lack of knowledge about the high-yielding buffalo breed
• Scarcity of quality buffalo feed, fodder and pasture land
• Lack of technical skills in buffalo reproduction and production personal
• No or limited facilities to breed improvement technologies
• Lack of breeding infrastructure
• Non-availability of proven bull
• Lack of coordination among farmers, researchers, govt. and non-govt. organization, university and other beneficiaries
Recommendations
• Developing and strengthening the breeding infrastructure
• Continuous up-gradation of native buffaloes by Murrah, Nili-ravi or mediterranean breed
• Reproductive biotechnologies should be used including AL and embryo transfer
• Frequently advertise the beneficial effects of buffalo milk and meat
• Development of manpower by technical training
• National and international collaboration should be strengthened
• Private investment should be encouraged
• Alternative feed supply eg. maize

The detailed description of this workshop is given below
Aim:
There is a wide extension of AI programs in buffalo, sheep and goats countrywide for increasing the productivity and reproductivity of buffalo, sheep and goats to ensure socioeconomic safety and nutrition.
Objectives:
a) To extend the AI program in buffalo sheep and goats countrywide
b) To find out the constraints of AI through group discussion of stakeholders
c) To find out the problem and make a report of recommendation from the workshop

Key words: Buffalo, Sheep, goat, AI, constraints
