MACROSCOPIC AND MICROSCOPIC STANDARDIZATION OF Vitex negundo LINN. STEM BARK

Abstract

Vitex negundo Linn. belongs to family Verbenaceae. It is medicinally useful in
rheumatism and opthalmic disorders. Present study provides macro and microscopic details of the
stem bark of Vitex negundo. Besides powder microscopy and organoleptic characters are presented.
The results of the standardization may throw light on the botanical identity of the plant Vitex
negundo which may help the authenticity of the drug and also to differentiate it from its allied
species (viz., Vitex trifolia, Vitex altissima) and adulterants. Cork possess layers of large cells
accompanied with narrow cells. Besides presence of banded stone cells in phelloderm, secondary
phloem and abundant starch grains.TLC studies of the drug is also presented.
