Abstract

In a group of 73 cases of hepatitis (HBsAg +ve group A and HBsAg -ve group B) immunological alterations were studied. 22 age, sex matched controls were included. Maximum (93%) of patients belonged to 20-40 years age group. Jaundice (100%), hepatomegaly (48%), anorexia (86%), nausea (83%) and fever (70%) were the predominant clinical sign and symptoms. The biochemical parameters were significantly raised in both groups. Serum IgA, IgG, IgM were raised in HBsAg positive patients, in comparison only IgA and IgM were increased in HBsAg negative group. Circulating immune complexes were high in positive cases. It was observed that high level of immunological alterations were found in HBsAg positive cases indicative of severe hepatic as well as extra hepatic manifestations.

Key words: Hepatitis, Hepatomegaly, Immunological alterations, Serum IgA, IgG,IgM, HBsAg.
