In the present study, neurotheraputic effect of the extract of Rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis L.) leave extract was investigated against acrylamide (ACR)- induced neurotoxicity of male albino rat . Daily dose (30 mg/kg i.p.) injection of ACR for one week caused a significant decrease in catecholamine content in all tested brain areas (cerebellum, brain stem, striatum, cerebral cortex, hypothalamus and hippocampus); this may be due to; axon and nerve terminal degeneration, which caused changes in transmitter synthesis, storage uptake and release as a result the content of neurotransmitters is decreased. Whereas, daily dose (30 mg/kg i.p.) injection of ACR for one week and treatment with Rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis L.) leave extract (100 mg/kg i.p.) for three weeks caused a significant increased in catecholamine content in all tested brain areas; this is may be due to the presence of carnosol , carnosic acid and caffic acid which have antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities. Also, the co-administration of rosemary extract and acrylamide caused a significant decreased in catecholamines content in all regions at most of time intervals. This is may be due to the presence of caffeic acid and its derivative and rosmarinic acid which affected the uptake of monoamines and monoamines oxidase activity, at the same time. The extract has many components that have potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory activities that act against acrylamide neurotoxicity. The extract improves the content of catecholamine content in most of the tested brain areas compared with animal group that received acrylamide. From the result, we can say that the rosemary extract has therapeutic effect against acrylamide neurotoxicity.
