IMPLICATION OF THE NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF SEED CHARACTERS ON THE TAXONOMIC TREATMENT OF SOME TAXA OF LILIACEAE

Magdy M. Mourad Karima A. Hamed Sally S. Rabie.

Abstract

The macro-and micromorphological seed characters of 23 species and two varieties of Liliaceae in Egypt were investigated using the light, stereo, and scanning electron microscopes. The obtained character states (105 states) were coded and analysed using numerical methods. The resulting dendrogram delimited the studied taxa in two series, three sub-series, five clusters and 11 groups. The results generally agree with the tribal grouping of the studied taxa as proposed by Bentham and Hooker (1876). However Dipcadi and Gagea were separated from the tribes Scilleae and Tulipeae, respectively.

Key words: Liliaceae, seed morphology, seed anatomy
