André M. Marques1*, Maria Cristina H. P. Lima1, Hiram A. Costa Fo2, Helna S. Passinho3 and MariaAuxiliadora C. Kaplan.

Abstract

The genus Plectranthus comprises about 300 species distributed over tropical Africa, America, Asia andAustralia. In this work we have studied the most common Plectranthus species used as tea drinks known in theBrazil as “Boldo”, where it is very popular for gastric spasms and liver disorders. Since the same trivial name isused for different Plectranthus species, ethnobotanical information becomes very difficult and confusing. Theessential oils from Plectranthus barbatus, P. grandis, P. ornatus were obtained by HS-SPME. Their analyseswere performed by GC-MS.

Key words: Essential oil, Plectranthus barbatus, Plectranthus grandis, Plectranthus ornatus, SPME
