STRATEGIC CORRELATES OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION IN THE FINANCIAL SERVICES INDUSTRY OF PORTUGAL

Vftor F. C. Gom;alves; David W. Grigsby.

Abstract

The rapid internationalization of many industries in recent years has increased the level of competition which many firmsface. This new exposure to global competition has created a need for technology adoption which allows f irms to process and evaluate the increased amount of information provided by the global competitive environment. This internationa lization has, in turn, brought about a need for firms to understand the relationships among glo bal competition, information technology, and sustaining their competitive advantage. While some past research has explored the periphery of this issue, a need clearly exists for work which can both better account f or the process or interpretation utilized in strategic issue diagnosis (Dutton and Dukerich, i991), and examine the issue dimensions more broadly (Ginsberg and Venkatraman, 1992). This paper will attempt to do this first by reviewing relevant concepts and previous research in technology adoption strategy, environment, and competitive advantage, then by developing and testing a model of the relationship between the competitive global environment and technology adoption.
