Frequency of bleeding oesophageal varices on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in patients experience at POF Hospital, Wah Cantt.

Objective: To measure the frequency of bleeding oesophageal varices on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or oesophageogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) in patients presenting at POF Hospital with upper GI bleed.
Duration of study: The study was conducted in Endoscopy department of POF Hospital from 1st Jan 2009 to 30th June 2010.
Methods: The study included 100 patients who presented to POF Hospital Wah Cantt during the study period with history of Upper GI bleed. Demographic detailes include age, sex and designation.
Results: According to our study 40% of the patients presenting with upper GI bleed had variceal bleeding and 35% had peptic ulcer and 6% presented with oesophagitis.
Conclusion: Oesophageal varices were most frequent cause of bleeding in patients presented with symptoms of upper GI bleed with majority of patients in 50-70 year age group.
