Emerging burden of obesity and overweight in adolescent school girls

Abstract
Objective: To study the frequency of obesity and overweight in the adolescent school girls of Karachi.
Study design: Descriptive cross sectional study.
Setting and Duration: This study was conducted at a private girls school of high socio-economic status in Karachi in May 2011.
Methods: The department of Pediatrics at Hamdard College of Medicine, Hamdard University obtained written permission from the principal and written informed consent was obtained from the parents. Data collected by simple cluster sampling technique, on a predesigned Proforma, with the family history of diabetes mellitus and heart disease and hypertension in the parents. Height in centimeter was measured on stando meter, and weight in kilogram was recorded on calibrated weighing scale. Body mass index was calculated by the standard procedure. Life style profile was studied by the eating habits of the family, number of hours spent on watching television, computer games, and physical activities.
Results: Out of the total number of 570, 61% girls were between 13 to 15 years of age and 4.8 % were above 16 years. Family history of diabetes was present in 36.4 %, 24.4 % had history of hypertension, 17 % had family history of heart disease, 53 % children were watching television for 2 hours and more per day, 22.2 % children were spending over 2 hours on computer games. 89 % children were not doing any physical exercise. 10 % of children were found to be overweight, 8% children were obese and 18.2% children were between 75 to 90 percentile.
Conculsion: Overweight and obesity in children is the emerging burden especially in the high socioeconomic group and needs special consideration
