An overview of clinical and therapeutic implications of citicoline

Abstract

Citicoline is a complex organic molecule which is essential precursor for the synthesis of a key component of for cell membrane integrity and repair “phosphatidylcholine”. Citicoline has also undergone several toxicological evaluations in multiple animal models and has been proven to have a high level of safety. Citicoline has been administered to improve neurological recovery various conditions including in traumatic brain injuries, stroke, vascular dementia, Parkinson's disease, and aging. Although results of many studies seems to have beneficial impact of citicoline on several cognitive domains however there is a need for further studies with a greater number of patients to develop uniform criteria and to understand citicoline efficacy for neuroprotection and neural repair.
