Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical profile of patients with Non-hodgkin’s lymphoma

Abstract

Objective: To determine the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical patterns of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) at our institution.
Methodology: This descriptive study was conducted in the pathology department, Rehman Medical Institute, Peshawar from July 2013 to Jan 2018. Total 139 proven cases of NHL were included. The antibodies used were LCA, CD 20, CD3, CD30, CD15, Ki-67, CD10, CD5, Cyclin D1, Bcl-2, CD23, CD43. SPSS version 23 was used to analyze data. Chi-square test was applied and a p< 0.05 was taken as significant.
Results: Out of 139 patients, 96(69.1%) were male and 43(30.9%) female, most in the age group 51-60 years. The mean age was 46.04 ±21.06 years (range 2-102). Male: female ratio was 2.21:1. The most common presenting feature was neck swelling (41.72%). Primary site distribution was nodal (35.25%) and extra‑nodal (64.74%). The most common involved lymph node sites were cervical lymph (69.38%), and extra‑nodal NHL included majority cases bone marrow involvement (55%). B-cell lymphomas formed 90.64%, whereas T-cell lymphomas formed 9.36%. In B cell lymphoma, 20.63% was DLBCL, and majority of T‑cell lymphoma were extra-nodal NK and Precursor T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma, noted in 38% each.
Conclusion: Most common lymphoma was B-cell lymphoma, in which DLBCL was on the top. In T-Cell Lymphoma, extra-nodal NK was the most common. Immunohistochemistry is an important investigation for all lymphomas, which is vital for immunotherapy and for differential diagnosis with other malignancies.
