Chemical Burn and Found Down Crush Injury: A Dual Cause of Upper Extremity Compartment Syndrome

Miriam Henry.

Abstract

Compartment syndrome of the hand is an uncommon but emergent sequela of severe burns. While compartment syndrome following severe electrical burns is well-documented in current literature, there are relatively few reported cases associated with chemical contact burns. We present a case of chemical contact burns to the left hand in conjunction with pressure related ischemia, which despite early recognition and prompt operative intervention, including fasciotomies in addition to escharotomies, resulted in limb loss. The literature is reviewed and diagnosis and treatment are discussed to highlight diagnostic clues and initiation of prompt surgical intervention.

Key words: KEY WORDS: Compartment syndrome, chemical burns, found down, fasciotomies
