Vaginal route is effective for both local and systemic drug deliveries. Vaginal mucoadhesive drug delivery systems offer a number of advantages for the formulation scientist to consider vagina as a preferred route for the treatment and management of vaginal infections. Physiological and formulation
challenges need to be addressed for developing vaginal mucoadhesive systems. The review article starts with the introduction about vaginal physiology
and vaginal infections. Work done by researchers on different mucoadhesive formulations viz. films, tablets, gels, microspheres, liquid crystal
precursor systems has also been included. Various marketed and patented vaginal compositions have been listed in tabular form. With the advent of
new drug delivery technologies, mucoadhesive vaginal drug delivery could see a bright future in terms of possible research and commercial outcomes.
