HARMONICS MITIGATION USING DELTA CONNECTED CASCADED H-BRIDGE BASED ACTIVE POWER FILTER

Aminu Jibrin Aliyu, Adamu Saidu Abubakar, Abdullahi Bala Kunya, Sani Salisu.

Abstract

Nonlinear loads, such as power electronics introduces harmonics into the power system, and in-turn, the power quality of the system is affected. Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) among other techniques used in solving current harmonics related problems has proven to be the most prolific. In this research paper a cascaded H-bridge in delta connection is designed to introduce the compensating current into the power system. Level shifted Pulse Width Modulation Scheme was deployed for the generation of control pulses. The control strategy is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment, and its effectiveness was tested on balanced supply. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis showed that the THD was reduced from 30.76% to 3.89%. The result shows the effectiveness of the developed SAPF and conformity with IEEE 519 standard.

Key words: active power filter; fast Fourier transform; reference current generation; CHB
