Environmental contamination due to anthropogenic and natural sources is on rise due to increasing human population, industrialization and urbanization. The diverse range of the chemical pollutants discharged by the industries to the environment disturbs the delicate balance of the ecosystem. The inefficient waste management strategies make the condition worsen. In recent years, bioremediation has emerged as the flag-bearer of feasible, efficient, and eco-friendly waste management approaches. More specifically, micro-remediation has proven very effective in the degradation of agrochemicals, electronic waste, biomedical waste, dyes, heavy metals, and sewage. Microbial enzymes viz. dehalogenases, dehydrogenases, esterases, hydrolases, laccases, lipases, and proteases are the key players of micro-remediation processes and therefore, getting more attention nowadays. The blending of microbial enzymes, genetic engineering, and modern analytic technologies like spectroscopy, spectrometry, and chromatography has opened new avenues for waste management. Bioremediation is thus a versatile and safe technology for environmental decontamination.
