A twisted tale: A case of acquired Vitamin K deficiency

Vitamin K, a fat-soluble vitamin is an essential cofactor for the activation of coagulation factors by gamma carboxylation. Vitamin K Deficiency (VKD) coagulopathy is clinically diagnosed by international normalized ratio (INR) prolongation, protein induced by VK antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) elevation and correction by intravenous vitamin K. Even though VKD is commonly seen in the paediatric population it can present in adulthood due to malnutrition, malabsorption, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, certain drug use, sepsis, malignancy and chronic kidney disease.
