Review of Researches Related to Competencies of Special Education Teachers Graduated from Alternative Certification Programs

Abstract

With the increase of the number of the students with special needs, the requirement of special education teacher shows a rapid rise. In order to meet this teacher need there are different teacher training implementations in the world. In this study, the researches implemented about alternative certificate programs (ACP) between 2008-2018 were examined. When the advantages of the ACP are investigated, it is seen that teachers are trained expeditiously, these programs are short, low cost, school based and the persons from different branches are included in these programs. When the disadvantages of the ACP are investigated it is seen that while training teacher candidates it is not given importance to educational and scientific theories, the teacher candidates are trained with a limited formal education, there is limited number of scientific knowledge about the validity and findings of these programs and there are essential problems and deficiency in quality of these programs.
