Analysis of Elementary School Pre-service Teachers for Several Variables

Abstract

The study aims to explain the personal information of pre-service teachers and their reasons for selecting the teaching profession at university. The study has been conducted on elementary education pre-service teachers at Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University in the spring term of the academic year 2008-2009. The research group consisted of 921 females and 323 males, with a total of 1244 pre-service teachers. The findings are as follows: Female pre-service teachers preferred their current departments among their first eight preferences during the university placement. Types of school from which pre-service teachers graduated are general high school, super (foreign language intensive) high school, and Anatolian high school, vocational high school for girls, and teacher high school. Pre-service teachers’ reasons for choosing their current department are enjoying teaching, having an employment guarantee, teaching being their ideal occupation and the examination system of OSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center).
