Introducing Careers to Primary School Students

Feride BACANLI,Seren TORUN.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to determine the main criteria which should be considered by school counselors and teachers while introducing careers. These basic criteria have been defined based on Super's career development of child theory, Piaget's cognitive development theory and Erikson's psychosocial development theory. Careers such as Nurse, veterinarian, lawyer and journalist have been introduced according to the defined criteria. Also some theoretical information and principles which school counselors and teachers need to follow while they are introducing careers have been explained. These career description activities which were developed according to each grade level of 1st- 5th grade students have been presented as an example in this study. Increasing career description activities and adopting these same activities to different career descriptions by taking into account the theoretical information and principles explained by school counselors and teachers is suggested.
