Assessing an Environment Designed for the Popularization of Mathematics

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess a learning environment created in order to popularize mathematics among young pupils (10 - 13 years old). The environment was designed on the basis of some theories and approaches in mathematics education and was integrated in a project called Eskisehir Mathematics School. Conducted in case study method, the data was collected from various sources. A questionnaire was administrated to the participants. Pupils’ and teachers’ written reports were used to complete the questionnaire findings. The results indicated that the activities were appreciated by the majority of participants and had some positive effects on participants’ views and attitudes towards mathematics, meaning - with certain limits - the contribution of such an environment to the popularization of mathematics.
