Behavioral Habits of Primary and Secondary Teachers and Their Perceptions on the Characteristics of a “Good Teacher”

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine the behavioral habits of primary and secondary school teachers and their perceptions on the characteristics of “good teachers.” Study group was composed of 183 primary and secondary school teachers in Eskişehir. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and Chi-square. Qualitative data regarding “good teacher” characteristics was analyzed with content analysis. Findings indicated that teachers read fewer books on psychology and teaching profession. When compared, female teachers to male teachers, primary school teachers to secondary school teachers, more experienced teachers to less experienced ones spent more effort to solve student problems. Teachers emphasized characteristics of a “good teacher” as personality characteristics, professional motivation, communication skills, and subject knowledge.
