The Prevalence of Aggressive and Violent Behaviors Among Elementary School Students

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of aggressive and violent behaviors in
elementary school students in relation to different variables. 951 students from 4th to 8th elementary school
grades in zmir participated in this study. Results show that 40% of students were involved in a physical fight,
20% of students were involved in a group fight, 7% of students carried a sharp object such as a knife at school,
and 6% of students injured a peer with a sharp object at least once in the last academic year. Significant gender
and grade differences were found among physical fighting rates and exposure to physical and relational
aggressive behaviour.
