Listening in Music, Types of Listening and Music Teaching Students' Listening Approaches

Abstract

The aim of this research was to reveal the place and significance of 'listening in music', types of listening and Music Teaching students' listening approaches. Survey was used in the research as data collection tool. The survey form prepared by the researchers consists of 30 questions including closed-ended and open-ended questions. The survey was conducted on 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th students studying in the Department of Music Teaching at Harran University, Karadeniz Technical University and Trakya University (N=220). Research findings showed that, the students had a low rate of general music listening and the genre of music they studied, they were close to active listening approach as they spared a special time to listen to music and they focused exclusively on music when listening, and yet, their knowledge about the instruments was missing regarding the genre of music they liked listening to and regarding the composers and performers in classical music. They also found it difficult to express the reasons why they liked or disliked the music they listened to.
