The Impact of Gender on Primary School Students’ Attitudes towards Choosing a ProfessionHicran Çetin Gündüz,

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of gender stereotypes on the attitudes of primary school 4th graders’ towards professions. To this end, cartoons and worksheets involving the life stories of four famous scientists (Dilhan Eryurt, Kamile Şevki Mutlu, Nermin Abadan Unat, Remziye Hisar) were prepared. In addition, trainings were given to the participating 4th grade teachers on gender, professional guidance, the impact of gender stereotypes in choosing profession and the use of movies in education. The study was conducted through classroom teachers and students were asked to fill in the “Attitude Towards Gender-Based Career Choices Scale” before and after they watched the cartoons. The data were analysed in SPSS 22 program and independent samples t-test, paired sample t-test and two-way ANOVA for mixed measures were conducted.
