Students’ Errors and Misunderstanding towards Algebra: Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers’ Prediction Skills of Error and Misunderstanding and Solution Suggestions

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the pre-service mathematics teachers’ prediction skills about what might be 7th and 8th grade middle school students’ errors and misunderstandings on algebraic expressions and operations as well as solution suggestions about how these difficulties might be overcome. There were ninety nine middle school students and one hundreds twenty pre-service elementary and secondary mathematics teachers involved in this study. Data gathered from a test consist of 10 open-ended questions. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the research questions and it is done using frequency and percentage.
