In the present experimental investigation, the effect of mercerisation of banana fibers into
PP/Banana fibers on the behaviour of PP/Banana composites has been explored. The PP/Banana composites
were developed using Direct Injection Molding process. FTIR spectroscopy and morphological evaluations of
the banana fibers were done to assess the effect of mercerisation. Comparative analysis of tensile strength of the
developed composites revealed that untreated banana fibre reinforced composites (U-BFRC) exhibit the lowest
strength. The tensile strength of the U-BFRC was observed to be lower than that of virgin PP. The tensile
strength was observed to initially increase with the increasing NaOH concentration of up to 5 wt. %. However,
with further increase in the concentration a decline in the tensile strength was observed. Fractographs of failed
tensile test specimens also validate these findings.
