Evolution of cardioplegia - A brief review

Cardiac surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgery nowadays - thanks to improved extracorporeal circulation technique, improved postoperative care as well as myocardial protection strategy. Cardioplegia solution was conceptualized to stop the heart for surgery as well as to protect the heart. Various modifications of cardioplegia solution had been made to make it more cardio-friendly. Following review article is a concise review of evolution of various cardioplegia solutions and their various components.
