Efficacy of Nirgundi Patra Niruha Basti the Treatment of Gridhrasi : A Case Report

Abstract

Background: Case study, where a patient with Gridhrasi was treated with Nirgundi patra Kashaya basti in yoga basti pattern. Various outcome measures adopted and results are described with a view to further develop and publish the ayurvedic treatment practices to the wide audience.
Case presentation: A 43-year-old patient was diagnosed with Gridhrasi (Sciatica), with the main symptom being pain radiating from lower back onto right leg. The pain prevented the patient from walking more than 50 meters, by which time, legs would go numb. The patient feels relief for a short duration by the application of soothening creams and hot applications like oil, but the pain used to return after some time. The patient was admitted in the hospital and was administered Nirgundi patra kashaya basti in the early morning and next day murchita tila taila anuvasana basti was administered after lunch. The course was continued for 8 days.
Conclusion: By the end of treatment, the patient had considerable relief from pain and numbness. This shows that Vitex negundo decoction enema to be effective in cases of sciatica.
