Incidence of atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing valve surgery

Abstract

Objective: To find the frequency of new onset of atrial fibrillation after different heart valves replacement surgery in patient of either gender and various age groups.
Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted in cardiac surgery unit of LRH, Peshawar from September 2017 to January 2018. The patients of 15-70 years age of both genders were included in the study on the basis of convenient sampling technique. The data were collected through a standard pro forma and was analyzed through SPSS version 22.
Results: Out of 80 patients, 37 (46.3%) were males and 43 (53.8%) females. Mean age was 37.11±11.773 years. Frequency of new onset of post-operative atrial fibrillation was observed in 21 (26.3%) patients’ out of these, 10 were male and 11 were female.
Conclusion: The frequency of post-op atrial fibrillation is not affected by patient genders, age and type of valve surgery.
