Abdulkareem Mubarak Balhareth, Nasser Adel Alghamdi, Saleh Yehya Albarakati.

Abstract

Background: This work investigated the quantity and trends of research output by medical students/interns from Saudi Arabia.
Methods: This bibliometric analysis used the PubMed database to run a search that resulted in 167 articles. Of them, 147 articles were eligible for the current analysis. Information for the following variables was collected: date of online publication, the region, affiliated institution, journal name, citescore, number of citations, number of authors per paper, type of publication, specialty, and academic level.
Results: Out of the 146 included publications, 2 (1.4%) articles were disseminated in 2014. Since then, the number steadily increased, reaching 47 publications by 2020 (i.e., 47 (32.2%). It appeared that the largest proportion of publications came from the Riyadh region, 52 (35.6%). Qassim University had the largest research output from a single institution, 19 (13.0%). In descending order, the three most frequently used study designs were cross-sectional 96 (65.8%), case report, 25 (17.1%), and retrospective chart review, 8 (5.5%). The first 2 journals of the 10 commonly used journals in our database had no citescores. The overall average of citations per document across the years was 8.5 (SD = 35.9).
Conclusions: The current study found a steady increase in the number of publications by Saudi medical interns/students. Most of them were observational studies and were disseminated in journals with low impact in the literature. We recommend that future investigations focus on exploring the hurdles that stand in the way of interns/students to publish higher-quality works.

Key words: Medical student/interns, Research, Patterns, Trends, Saudi Arabia
