Rare survival of a young lady with acute aluminium phosphide poisoning

Yashaswini LS.

Abstract

Aluminium phosphide (ALP) is a highly toxic compound. When consumed accidentally or by suicidal intention, it results in high mortality rates. A 28-year-old female who allegedly ingested 2 tablets of ALP presented with vomiting, pain abdomen, diarrhoea and altered sensorium. She developed severe hypotension, acute respiratory distress and early disseminated coagulation. Aggressive resuscitation was done with stomach wash, IV fluids, Magnesium sulphate injection and vasopressors. Fortunately, the patient survived with all these efforts and was discharged home. In cases like this, a better outcome can be achieved with early arrival, prompt diagnosis, aggressive resuscitation and intensive monitoring.

Key words: Aluminium Phosphide, Poisoning, Magnesium Sulphate
