Abstract

Objectives: Assessing the clinical and radiological outcomes of patients with stable scaphoid nonunions who underwent percutaneous fixation without grafting.
Methods: Twenty stable scaphoid nonunion patients treated in our hospital between 2014-2017. All patients treated with percutaneous fixation without grafting. Patients were evaluated functionally and radiologically retrospectively during the follow up period.
Results: Mean age was 26.7. Mean follow up time was 41.3 months. 14 patients were in the waist region and 6 patients were in the proximal pole. According to Slade and Dodds classification; 14 patients were grade 4 and 6 patients were grade 3 nonunions. Union occurred in 16 of 20 patients, but not union in 4 patients. Mean radiological union time was 12 weeks in 16 patients.
Conclusion: Percutaneous screwing without grafting may be a preferred treatment for stable scaphoid nonunions with minimal sclerosis and a small cystic component. Location of the fracture, cystic changes, nonunion duration, and alignment should be considered in treatment planning.

Key words: nonunion; percutaneous fixation; scaphoid
