Prevalence of candidiasis in surgical ICU patients of a tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan

Abstract

Objective: To find the current pattern and frequency of fungal infection in intensive care unit of a tertiary care hospital Karachi.
Methodology: This Retrospective descriptive observational study was carried out at Clinical Laboratory, Civil hospital, Karachi from January 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. The clinical specimens were collected from the patients of surgical ICU and isolates were identified and characterized by standard methods.
Results: Out of 60 specimens, Candida albicans were isolated from 42 specimens; however, 18 were confirmed for Candida species. Urine specimens showed the greatest prevalence of Candida. Younger male patients showed high incidence of Candida infection as compared with female patients.
Conclusion: Our study showed high frequency of candidiasis with male predominance. We also found increased frequency of non-albicans species. Due to certain limitations we couldn’t perform antifungal testing and identification of non-albicans species
