Health problems and health care requirements of the population affiliated to Tuzla Aydınlı Primary Care Centre

Abstract

Introduction and Objective: Primary health care services provide a cost-effective service and improvement to health indicators of the country, effective management of chronic diseases, and strengthening the healthy life behaviour of individuals and society. The aim of this study is to determine health indicators and health status of the population in Tuzla Aydınlı Primary Care Clinic (TA-EASM) for more effective service provision.

Materials and Methods: Individuals from primary care district of Marmara University TA-EASM were included in the observational, descriptive study. Sample is stratified according to age groups as 0-9; 10-17 and 18 and over. Questionnaires containing questions about sociodemographic status and health characteristics were performed face to face by researchers. Data were evaluated in SPSS 20.0 program and frequency distribution of health problems and service utilization characteristics were calculated.

Results: In our study, 97 of participants were in 0-9 group; 45 were in 10-17; and 160 were in 18 and/or over. A total of 302 individuals were enrolled in the study. Gender distribution of 0-9 age group was 52.6%F / 47.4M%. Education levels of 76.2% of their parents were over 8 years. Rate of consanguinity was 12.3%. All vaccines and respective scanning of 0-2 year old infants were complete. Gender distribution of 45 adolescents in group 10-17 was 68.9%F / 31.1%M. Education levels of 44.5% of the parents were over 8 years. Rate of chronic disease was 15.6%, 4.4% required special care. Rates of receiving counselling for tobacco use, physical activity, alcohol use, substance abuse, and reproductive health are 26.7%; 17.8%; 17.8%; 11.1%; 4.4% respectively. In our study, 61.3% of 160 subjects at ≥18 age group were F; Education level of %61.2 was >8 years. Chronic disease frequency was 51.9%, 3.6% required special care, and 3.8% required home health care. Disability rate was 6.9%; 22.5% were going to control monthly. 14.4% (n = 23) of this group had colon cancer screening, 23.8% (n = 38) had adult vaccines, 51.9% (n = 83) had regular eye controls, 42.5% (n = 68) had their hearing tests done. Rate of women in reproductive age was 62.9%. Rate of pap-smear testing was 1.4%.

Discussion and conclusion: The target population usually receives health care from ASM. The prevalence of chronic diseases in the adult group is high; childhood vaccines and screenings are done successfully; Consultancy services and screening programs for adult group should be developed.
