Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to assess knowledge and perceptions of parents regarding short stature in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to March 2026 among Makkah adults (≥18 years) using a validated, self-administered Arabic questionnaire distributed electronically. The questionnaire comprised sociodemographic variables and 11 knowledge items; seven contributed to a knowledge score (0–7), with >4 classified as good knowledge.
Results: Of 365 participants (68.8% female; 96.2% Saudi), 242 (66.3%) demonstrated good knowledge (mean score 4.98 ± 1.97). The lowest-scoring areas were familiarity with the Saudi growth chart (30.5% correct) and identification of the appropriate specialty referral (50.4%). Healthcare employment (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 6.16; 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.56–14.83; p < 0.001) and having children (aOR 3.08; 95% CI 1.62–5.85; p < 0.001) were the strongest independent predictors of good knowledge, while a positive family history was inversely associated (aOR 0.46; 95% CI 0.27–0.79; p = 0.005).
Conclusion: Two-thirds of parents demonstrated adequate knowledge, yet important deficits persisted regarding specialty referral, the Saudi growth chart, and timing of evaluation. Targeted public-health messaging directed at non-healthcare workers and families with a positive history is recommended.
