Power Control of a Wind Turbine Using Fuzzy Logic Control

Wind energy is one of the major sources of renewable energy, but the power generated from wind turbines is highly influenced by changes in wind speed and other operational parameters. The current study examines the application of fuzzy logic control in controlling wind turbine power generation and enhancing its response to changes in wind speed. A wind turbine model was created and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software, and three control methods were evaluated, including an uncontrolled model, a threshold logic model, and a fuzzy logic controller model. In the fuzzy logic controller model, the wind speed was used as the input parameter, while the power generation was the output parameter. Simulation results suggests that the uncontrolled approach permits the generation of power to be done continually depending on the wind velocity. The second approach involves limiting the power generation based on the use of threshold logic by shutting off power generation where the operation range is not selected. On the other hand, the fuzzy logic approach offers better regulation by permitting power generation within the safe operation range, limiting the power generation when the wind velocity is high, and does not permit power generation when the wind velocity is either very high or very low.
